Overview

As an apprentice, you will make a difference by supporting the team responsible for the service, repair and inspection of all items within the council’s diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment.   You will play a critical role within the team in ensuring the maintenance and testing occurs in a timely and efficient manner, for council vehicles and from associated organisations and external customers.

What will you be doing?


  • You will be working closely and alongside existing qualified mechanics where you will assist them in carrying out mechanical and electrical inspection, maintenance and repair work to a wide range of Council vehicles.  
  • You’ll learn how to carry out MOT test preparation work, defect identification and rectification, routine servicing and inspections.
    In addition you’ll be taught how to deal with repairs and maintenance vehicles of a larger scale such as 26 tonne gritters, tankers, buses, tippers, vans, cars and plant machinery/vehicles.
  • The most challenging aspect of your apprenticeship will be the substantial work that is involved working both indoors and outdoors.  This will involve working with compressed air power tools, working in confined spaces e.g. in an inspection pit under vehicles and climbing ladders/gantries.
  • Throughout your 3 year apprenticeship, we will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support in completing your Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance technician, which will involve block release learning at City of Bristol College, Parkway Campus, Motor Vehicle Technology Centre at Parkway, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, BS34 8SF.

All candidates that successfully reach the interview stages will be required to provide a 10 minute presentation as part of the recruitment process.

The salary for this apprenticeship is set at the current (April 2024) Age National Minimum Wage;

Working hours are as follows:

08:00 – 16:00 Monday – Thursday
08:00 – 15:30 Friday
 
The apprenticeship training will consist of class based learning and workplace learning. The programme will start in September 2024.

 
To successfully complete the apprenticeship you will be required you to complete an end point assessment that consists of a Multiple Choice Examination, Practical Task  Observation and Professional Discussion.
