Join EDF as a Radiological Protection Engineer, and you’ll join one of the most exciting and challenging projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK.

At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

As a Radiological Protection Engineer, you will ensure the Buildings within Edvance UK’s scope of responsibility meet the radiological protection requirements as required by the Nuclear Safety Authority.

Edvance is a joint venture between EDF and Framatome, established in 2018 in charge of the design (basic design) and the realization (studies, procurement, erection, testing and commissioning) of nuclear islands for new projects in France and worldwide. Spearhead of the French nuclear industry, it aims through its objectives and challenges of economic competitiveness and performance, to position itself sustainably in nuclear markets internationally and those of the renewal of the French fleet.

In particular, Edvance is responsible for the design and construction of the nuclear island for the Hinkley Point C project and for the design of the EPR2, an optimized EPR model incorporating the feedback from the ongoing EPR projects. It will also carry out new nuclear offers and projects in France and abroad.

Edvance UK is responsible for delivering the design for the Nuclear Island buildings, systems and equipment contracts for the Hinkley Point C EPR Project through the Integrated Team Bristol, support to HPC construction and commissioning activities, and preparing design replication feasibility and engineering activities for the Sizewell C Project.

This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside other Radiological Protection Engineers within Edvance UK and Paris/Lyon.

  • Assessing any civil and layout modifications that could impact the radiological and contamination zoning requirements of the building.
  • Ensuring that the design is consistent with UK context requirements.
  • Undertaking studies and calculations relating to the spread of radiation.
  • From 3D model extracts, model the areas with PANTHERE software and assign various source terms (sources of radioactivity).
  • Producing simulations for calculating the thickness of protection screens, depending on the reactor’s operating conditions, the geometry of the premises and the radioactive sources involved.
  • Writing radiation protection calculation reports to define the radiological zoning and contamination zoning of the buildings.
  • Defining the radiological classification of premises and systems.
  • Advising building leaders on the optimisation of premises.
