National Transport Manager – ,

  • This is a full-time role and will require travel in the UK and regular overnight stays away from home

  • Because this is a National role covering all our Logistics Operations, we are flexible on location 

Main Responsibilities

Strategy & Network Development

  • Lead the central transport function (Fleet & Compliance, Training & Safety, Transport Solutions)
  • Develop and deliver transport strategy aligned to the logistics business plan
  • Optimise and evolve radial and trunking networks 
  • Deliver infrastructure and network transformation projects

Transport Operations & Performance

  • Oversee end-to-end national transport operations ensuring high levels of service, efficiency, and performance
  • Maintain Retail SLAs while optimising cost and utilisation
  • Support RDC/NDC performance across compliance, safety, and service
  • Drive performance through KPIs (OT, cost per shop, utilisation)

Compliance & Regulatory Management

  • Ensure full compliance with Operator Licence and UK transport legislation
  • Manage relationships with Traffic Commissioners, DVLA and other enforcement bodies
  • Maintain robust audit and governance standards across all locations

Fleet, Technology & Innovation

  • Own fleet strategy (procurement, lifecycle, utilisation)
  • Evaluate, implement, and optimise new technologies in fleet management, planning, and telematics
  • Drive continuous improvement through digitalisation, automation, and innovation

Safety, Risk & Training

  • Lead initiatives to reduce road and delivery risk through structured training programmes
  • Deploy training resources to maximise driver capability and safety performance
  • Ensure delivery point risk assessments are developed and effectively communicated to drivers

Commercial & 3PL Management

  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements
  • Evaluate outsourcing vs. insourcing opportunities
  • Manage 3PL performance and value

People & Culture

  • Lead and develop high-performing central transport teams
  • Promote a safety-first, performance-driven culture
  • Drive engagement through performance recognition (e.g. Driver/Operator awards)

Project Delivery & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead cross-functional transport projects
  • Deliver process improvements and operational efficiencies
  • Provide insight and reporting to the wider logistics function
  • Drive continuous improvement across operational, safety, and cost metrics

Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • Significant senior experience in HGV transport operations
  • Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)
  • Strong knowledge of UK transport legislation and compliance
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong analytical, planning, and problem-solving capability
  • Proven delivery of operational and project improvements
  • Relevant logistics qualification and professional accreditation (e.g. CILT, IRTE, SOE)

Desirable

  • Multi-site, cross-functional leadership experience
  • Trunking and multi-drop distribution
  • Experience with TMS, telematics, and transport technology
