Education support worker – Permanent – Part Time

ID: 328800
Job Specialism: College
Location: Peterborough
Salary: £14.00
Closing Date: Friday, 6th November 2026

Could you help a young person discover what they’re capable of?

Every achievement matters. From developing a new way to communicate to gaining confidence, learning practical life skills or taking another step towards independence, the moments you help create can make a lasting difference.

At Sense College Peterborough, we’re looking for a compassionate, enthusiastic and creative Education Support Worker to help young people with complex disabilities achieve their goals and prepare for adulthood.

This isn’t just about supporting learning. It’s about recognising potential, finding new ways to overcome barriers and celebrating every milestone along the way.

Whether you’re already working in education or looking to bring your experience of supporting people with disabilities into a learning environment, this could be a rewarding next step in your career.

About the role

  • Location: Sense College Peterborough, 50 Forder Way, Cygnet Park, Hampton, Peterborough, PE7 8JB

  • Salary: £14.00 per hour

  • Hours: 21 hours per week, 9:15am–4:15pm, three days per week

  • Working pattern: 39 weeks per year

  • Contract: Permanent

What will you be doing?

No two learners are the same, and that’s what makes this role so interesting. You’ll work alongside experienced education colleagues to create meaningful, engaging learning experiences tailored to each person’s abilities, interests and aspirations.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting learners to develop communication, independence, confidence and essential life skills.

  • Helping deliver creative, inclusive learning activities that inspire learners and encourage them to achieve their goals.

  • Finding innovative ways to adapt activities and teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.

  • Supporting learners to work towards the outcomes in their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

  • Encouraging learners to explore technology and develop their English and maths skills in accessible, practical ways.

  • Building positive, trusting relationships and supporting learners to make choices and express their preferences.

  • Providing personal care and promoting dignity, wellbeing and independence where required.

  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, contributing to learner reviews and celebrating individual progress.

Sometimes the biggest achievement might seem like the smallest step. You’ll be there to recognise those moments and help learners build on them.

Learn, develop and grow with Sense

We believe supporting other people to learn should be an opportunity to keep learning yourself.

As an Education Support Worker, you’ll have opportunities to build your knowledge and experience of specialist education while developing skills that can support your future career.

The role includes opportunities to:

  • Develop specialist skills in supporting learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including complex needs and different communication approaches.

  • Learn from experienced education professionals, developing your confidence in planning and delivering inclusive learning activities.

  • Work towards a Level 3 teaching support qualification, building on your existing knowledge and experience.

  • Take part in continuing professional development (CPD) to strengthen your practice and keep your skills up to date.

  • Contribute to professional learning opportunities, including external development events relevant to Education Support Workers.

Whether you want to deepen your expertise in disability support or develop a longer-term career in education, you’ll be joining an environment where learning is valued.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who believes that every learner deserves the opportunity to achieve their potential.

You’ll need:

  • A positive, enthusiastic and inclusive approach to supporting people with special educational needs and disabilities.

  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy, equivalent to Level 2.

  • An understanding of person-centred support and the importance of individual learning goals.

  • The ability to keep accurate records and contribute to monitoring learner progress.

  • A willingness to support learners with personal care where needed.

  • The creativity, patience and adaptability to make learning accessible to different individuals.

  • A willingness to work towards a Level 3 teaching support qualification.

Experience in specialist education, supporting people with sensory impairments or complex needs, or using different communication methods would be an advantage. Qualifications such as British Sign Language Level 1, a Health and Social Care Diploma or an existing teaching support qualification would also be welcome.

You don’t need to arrive knowing everything. What matters is your commitment to learning, your ability to build meaningful relationships and your determination to help learners succeed.

Why join Sense?

At Sense, you’ll be part of a team committed to making education more inclusive and supporting disabled people to live the lives they choose.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills, work alongside knowledgeable colleagues and see the difference your support makes to learners over time.

You’ll also benefit from Sense’s wider employee benefits, including access to learning and development opportunities, wellbeing support, pension provision and employee discounts, subject to eligibility.
