Job overview

Base: Main base Ashford / St Peter’s Hospital, with requirement to work across both St Peter’s and Ashford Hospital sites to fulfil role and working at any other Trust site as required.  Post-holder will be required to travel to patient’s home and between local community hubs.

An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Tobacco Dependency Advisor to work within Ashford and St Peters Hospitals in patient services to specifically deliver smoking cessation support to in patients   in a flexible and innovative way.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the Tobacco Dependency Advisor for Patient Services. 

They will provide intermediate stop smoking support throughout the inpatient stay, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring, behavioural support, practical and social support, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy

They will plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines for  inpatients.  This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues

They will contribute to National and local drivers by verifying and auditing data for local, regional and National submission.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical or technical 

 To plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines for inpatients.  This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues   

•   Participate in educating in-patients  about the benefits of stopping smoking I  and give support to those wanting to quit. 

•   Provide intermediate stop smoking support for , using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring, behavioural support, practical and social support, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Leadership 

•       To develop and maintain a specialist knowledge base in smoking cessation including an overview of new developments and identify opportunities to integrate these into own and others practice.      

• To participate in the KSF process including contributing to the development of a personal development plan and appraisal      

Information and reporting

•      Keep accurate records and enable good data collection. Maintain accurate up to date and comprehensive records at all times and review own personal performance against KPI’s 

 Technology or system support

•       To contribute to the process of quality assurance in service delivery

       To maintain accurate digital patient notes    

Service improvement

•   Work with the Nurse Consultant for Harms Free Care to seek out opportunities to develop and implement stop smoking services in a range of health and community settings     

  Communications and Engagement

•       Deliver VBA training for staff in the Trust & work with the Harms Free Care Consultant Nurse to devise a training package

•       Promote good relationships with patients, public, staff and community services in verbal and written communication

•       To utilise communication skills to support the local delivery of community and national campaigns e.g. No Smoking Day       

•       Communicates sensitively with clients and communicates effectively where there are barriers such as language, ethnicity, mental health and learning difficulties
